Autumn in Utah: 7 Breathtaking Spots for Fall Colors (Local's Guide)

As a Utah local, I am never surprised by how beautiful the surrounding canyons of Salt Lake City become every fall. Truthfully I’ve had a bit of FOMO as I’ve jet away to the east coast for the past few autumn seasons. In 2024, I spent my whole fall right here in Utah and was not disappointed for a second on how gorgeous it was. Read on to discover some of my favorite spots I visited this fall.

1. Guardsman Pass: A Golden Gateway

Our adventure begins at Guardsman Pass, where some of the brightest yellows of the season await. As you wind through Big Cottonwood Canyon, you'll be greeted by a sea of aspens, their leaves shimmering like gold in the setting sun. I was surprised at how much I loved shooting these vibrant colors in the midday sun, as I usually prefer golden hour. I highly recommend going up guardsman pass mid day into sunset to capture similar colors. I parked at this trailhead and explored the paths and meadow.

2. Scenic Alpine Loop: A Drive to Remember

The Alpine Loop offers a picturesque drive that showcases Utah's fall colors in all their glory. As you navigate this scenic byway, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the Wasatch Range popping with bright red, orange, and yellow colors. There is a small pull-off on the main part of this scenic loop, but don’t count on it being empty, we saw a lot of traffic in this area during fall.

3. Fifth Water Hot Springs

For a unique fall experience, hike out to Fifth Water Hot Springs. The trail offers not only the promise of a relaxing soak, but also a stunning display of fall foliage along the way. Many people have asked me, "Aren't you cold?" "Is the water that blue?" "How did you get it all to yourself?" To which I say: The water is hot, the water is blue (depending on recent rainfall), and you can have it all to yourself if you hike early enough!

5. Buffalo Peak and Meadow: Nature's Palette

Buffalo Peak and its surrounding meadow offer a gentle hiking experience without compromising on beauty. The open spaces here allow for unobstructed views of the changing leaves and an incredible view of Mt. Timpanogos. This area is easily accessible with a 4x4 vehicle. The drive begins as a scenic route but quickly turns into a bumpy dirt road. There are some spots where even small cars have gotten stuck, so it's best to drive up with a 4x4 vehicle. Once you reach the meadow, you can park along the narrow road and walk through this beautiful area. It has become extremely popular for photographers, and there are often fun attractions like trampolines or a half pipe placed in the meadow. Its extra important to leave no trace in these popular nature areas.

4. Kyhv Peak: A Mountain of Color

Kyhv Peak provides a panoramic view of the changing foliage in Provo Canyon. Pictured, you can see one of the many hairpins you will encounter as you drive up to the peak. Buffalo Meadow is along this drive and you'‘ll encounter many places to pull off and enjoy the view.

6. Silver Lake: Reflections of Autumn

Make your way to Silver Lake. This lake is located at the end of a long, winding dirt road beyond the popular Tibble Fork Reservoir. I've spotted deer almost every time I've been there, and there are signs warning about bears as you enter the area. It's a perfect spot for camping, offering a 360-degree view of the autumn scenery when you wake up. To get to the dispersed camping area, continue past the upper parking lot, drive along a 4x4-required dirt road, and you'll arrive at your destination.

7. Big Cottonwood Canyon: A Colorful Conclusion

Our fall foliage tour concludes in Big Cottonwood Canyon, where winding roads cut through rocky outcrops draped in autumn colors. Find a spot to park, climb the rocks, and watch as the setting sun paints the canyon in warm, golden light. The exact spot pictured is the Stairs Gulch Trailhead which has parking before and after the bend.
